In and around the KNUST Museum: 33 works by 23 contemporary African and Black artists - coinciding with the exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Bonn/Germany.

// The Museum

The KNUST Museum aka Opoku Ware II Museum is located on the campus of one of the oldest existing universities in West Africa— the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. The institution serves to promote knowledge with the vision to collect, conserve, research and exhibit significant artistic, scientific and historical objects or artifacts in order to connect people to creativity, knowledge, and ideas for the development of humanity. 

// The art experience

Discover sculptures, objects, paintings and digital works multi-dimensionally: the carefully curated artworks are not physically on site, but virtually embedded in the environment. They enter into a dialogue with the architecture of the Kunstmuseum, with you and with each other. The exhibition opens up new perspectives in the field of augmented reality.

// The exhibition THE POWERHOUSE

Multifaceted, progressive works by African artists and Black artists from the Diaspora resound visually as a common voice on the grounds of the Kunstmuseum Bonn. They create an inspiring foundation for a self-determined, free and equal existence. The interweaving of virtual and simultaneously physical art experience sends a clear signal: A utopia is about to become reality.

THE POWERHOUSE creates an impressive force field and a breeding ground for interaction. The photogrammetrically and digitally processed artworks are more than the sum of their parts. The composition of the exhibition creates a multi-dimensional work that invites visitors to become part of it. The exhibition has already opened doors during its creation.

The exhibition was curated by the artist Nando Nkrumah, who has used AR technology as a tool for artistic intervention several times in the past.

ARX Africa is a project funded by the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany for the interactive networking of artists, creative professionals, institutions and civil society in Africa and Europe. It consists of the public web portal arxafrica.net and the first AR exhibition THE POWERHOUSE at the Kunstmuseum Bonn as the initial exhibition.

Technical requirements for visiting the exhibition

You will be able to visit the exhibition with almost any mobile Android or Apple device. You do not need an additional app.

In general // Please allow your location recognition and access to the camera of your smartphone or tablet. Experiencing the artworks generates increased energy consumption. So charge your device fully and ideally take a powerbank with you - and some patience on site to interact with the exhibition.

For Android // You need a device with Android 7.0 Nougat or higher. The latest version is Android 12. Your device must support ARCore and have the latest version of Google Play Services for AR. This version is already automatically installed on most suitable devices.

For Apple iOS // You need a device with iOS 12 or higher. The current version is iOS 15.
